Painting an Empty RoomWhite walls line the room.
I pick up the paintbrush and dip in the red paint.
I draw a scribble of a heart. It is uneven.

The DollhouseIn the attic of my house, there is a dollhouse. My grandpa made it for my mother for her fifth birthday. The grand, Victorian-style house sits on a lonely table in the dusty attic my family uses as a room for us to hang out in. The four-story house always mesmerized me. When I was nine or so, I would creep up into the attic and stare at the detailed house until I felt the need to play with it. Sometimes my sister would play with me. She would be the mom, dad, and older sister dolls, and I would be the little brother, baby sister, and dog. My sister loved to redecorate the house. She would move all the furniture onto the floor and arrange it to her will. I would watch her as she sat the pillows perfectly on the couch or make the beds with her nimble fingers. After all that time staring at the wooden house, I never knew what secrets it held.
